Journeyman Linemen Recognition Day
Jul 10, 2017
With some assistance from Local 47 and the IBEW in DC, California’s Congresswoman Linda Sanchez has introduced House Resolution 784 to designate July 10 as Journeyman Lineman Recognition Day.

The Resolution request states:

In every city and town in America, Journeyman Linemen constantly put themselves in danger to ensure reliable access to electricity for all. Risking perilous heights and energized electric lines, they represent a crucial and too often forgotten part of our nation’s infrastructure.

One of those heroes, Henry Miller, was the first elected president and founding member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, one of the largest and most diverse unions in our country. He began his career as a water boy on a government telegraph project in Texas at age 14. Year later, while working as a lineman Mr. Miller became acutely aware of the dangerous conditions and subpar wages faced by these vital workers. He traveled the country to organize his fellow linemen, and when the IBEW was formed in 1891, Miller’s peers chose him to be their leader. Unfortunately, his life was cut short on July 10, 1896 while working to solve a power outage in Washington, D.C. It is in his honor that we hope to recognize all Journeyman Linemen on that day.

As you may recall, July 10th was designated as IBEW Journeyman Linemen Recognition day in 2014 by the California Legislature, largely as a result of the efforts of IBEW Locals 1245 and 47 and our lobby firm, Carter Wetch and Associates.

Our local fully supports this new Congressional Resolution and encourages others to do so as well.

This day has also been recognized by both the U.S. Senate and Congress prior, although on different dates.

Fraternally,

/s/ Patrick Lavin
Business Manager

SCE Launches IBEW Code of Excellence
Jun 30, 2017
IBEW #47 and Southern California Edison (SCE) have collaborated to launch the IBEW’s Code of Excellence (COE) to our members working at SCE. Our Code of Excellence is a program designed to bring out the best in all of our members for their own benefit as well as that of the customer.

Hard hat and truck stickers have been distributed to work locations and the application of vehicle decals began yesterday and will continue today. As well, the Code of Excellence commitment statement is being distributed to employees today and tomorrow.

We rolled out a similar program of the IBEW Code of Excellence with then President Ed Hill and a video starring then SCE President Al Fohrer and me.

This edition has a new COE video by our International President Lonnie Stephenson and a video clip with me and SCE CEO Kevin Payne – along with a PowerPoint presentation. The tone of it is centered around workplace safety, first and foremost, and doing things the IBEW way – right the first time in a safe, well trained, and productive manner.

Check with your Stewards for information regarding any meetings, etc. planned pertaining to this important event. You can also check our website in the future for additional details regarding links to videos and other information.
